A Brief Taste of Orgo

A Brief Taste of Orgo In todays 5.12 lecture (in English, thats organic chemistry), I couldnt help but chuckle when I picked up the notes outlining the topics scheduled to be covered in the discussion. The list went something like this: Outline for Todays Lecture Oxidation Reactions of Alkenes Dihydroxylation Ozonolysis The Chemistry of Free Radicals Addition of Radicals to Alkenes Yes, you read that right. Ozonolysis. And I didnt even really choose to learn about it. It just sort of happened. In case you were curious, ozonolysis is actually a lot more straightforward than the Wikipedia article would let on. Basically, you take a double bond and some fresh ozone, rip the bond in half to make two new double bonds, stick an oxygen on the vacant end of each double bond and voila, ozonolysis. Theres much more going on than that, of course including a lot of oxygens shuffling around and some funky interactions with reducing agents but thats the bottom line. Works for me. In other news, since I last posted, I have both seen the Brawl hack with my own eyes and engaged in more than my fair share of Brawl matches. It goes without saying that both the hack and the game are even more awesome than mere words can describe. Regarding Brawl specifically, although Pikachu remains my favorite classic character, Ive found that I also fare pretty well as Ike. Perhaps youll disagree, but I have to say that the Smash Balls/Final Smashes are pretty ridiculously overpowered, so much so that my fraternity usually just disables them when we play. How about you guys? Who are your favorite characters? Finally, have I mentioned lately how much I love xkcd? If youre still looking for something to take your mind off of decisions and dont happen to have Brawl, you should go read it. Seriously. Your brain will thank you.

My Philosophy of Education Essay - 674 Words

Becoming a teacher was not something I always knew I wanted. As I approached an age where I really started considering what I would like to do for a career I only knew that I did not want to work in an office behind a desk all day. I wanted a job that would be interactive, challenging and exciting. I also knew I wanted a job that would be important and would somehow contribute to the world in an important way. I thought being a teacher; particularly a teacher in the primary levels would fulfill those hopes and goals assuming I dedicate myself to becoming an effective teacher who has a positive influence on the lives of my students. My personal goals of becoming a primary level teacher may have some effect on how I view educators since the way a first grade teacher teaches is going to be different then the way a fifth grade teacher teaches. I have observed teachers in the lower grade levels work and they have also given me insight into my philosophy on education. Demonstration of knowledge was encouraged in many of the classes I observed and children took real pride in knowing answers. I think one of the greatest ways you can keep a student involved and interested is positive reinforcement, by telling or showing a student that they behaved properly or that the work or thought they put into something is super you can show a student you care and encourage good work and behavior. Norms in Security Free Essays

Do international norms have an impact on security issues? Why? Norms can be understood as rules for standard behavior. Norms are a common belief or understanding usually shared by a majority. International norms are determined by the international community and they usually set the stage for the behavior of individual countries. We will write a custom essay sample on Norms in Security or any similar topic only for you Order Now These norms shape international as well as domestic security issues. These norms shape Inter-state behavior, they also shape the security policies of nation-states and they also serve to set certain normative standards about how the world should be. In this paper we will look at how the emergence of certain norms, taboos and International laws have contributed to International security concerns and sometimes also problems of mistrust. The major schools of International relations theory such as unilateralism and unrealism have not satisfactorily confronted the evolution of norms of Interstate behavior. However the constructivist literature draws on a variety of theoretical texts and empirical studies to argue that norms have illustrative power independent of structural and situational constraints. The belief that all norms are created by the powerful can be Halloween. As international norms have come to be shaped by a number of factors such as newer democracies, pressure groups, international and humanitarian organizations. Humanitarian values, global security, moral ethical behavior by powerful states are some of the values that have given direction to and reflect international norms as illustrated by the following quote. † The case of nuclear taboo is important theoretically because it challenges conventional views that international norms, especially in the security area, are created mainly by and for the powerful,† (Tangential, 2005, 7). The use of certain weapons or their prohibitions rather are shaped by factors that are not limited to decisions by nation states. The stimulation of a weapon and the mass opinion against it are responsible for giving rise to an international norm prohibiting that weapon. A case in the point is the chemical weapons. Stratifications of a weapon gives rise too taboo which then gets politicized. According to Price this is what ultimately led to the decision of countries In WI to refrain from the use of COW. In 1925 the Geneva Convention prohibited countries from first use of COW. An example Price (1995,77) states Is how In 1940 Britain considered resorting to COW In the occasion of a German Invasion but had to discard such thoughts as those acts would mark a departure from British traditions and principles. This shows that the public pollen mattered and public pollen highly consisted of principles that believed COW were Immoral and could not be used as a resort even In times of desperation. International norms however not always go In a singular deletion of cooperation and upholding of humanitarian values. Constructivist argue that international interactions can only advance international norms towards a culture of mutual help and friendliness. But this argument is not supported by the reality of International politics. Sometimes it triggers fresh rivalry or intensifies conflicts. An example here is during the five years from August 2003 to December 2008 seven rounds of Six Party Talks on nuclear issues on the Korean Peninsula. The outcome of the six nations’ continuous interaction during this time, however, was not in North Koreans acceptance of the norm of non-proliferation, but in its conducting on May 25 2009 its second nuclear test. Even though the aim of the other five countries was to prohibit North Korea from doing so (Executing, 2011: 233-264). Thus, the idea of international norm indeed may be to uphold the supremacy of a few and states like North Korea like to defy that, Just like India and Pakistan as well. Hegemony advance new international norms to other states to accept norms set out by the Hegemony which originated to serve its own security needs, by normative persuasion, external inducement, and internal reconstruction. Sometimes countries accept to do so as the prevailing internal conditions in its own country allow to recognize the importance of such a norm. In other cases, such a norm is against the national security interest of a Tate and that is where a conflict of interest arises. When Total Briar Payees became Indian Prime Minister, he authorized nuclear weapons testing at Popcorn. The United States forcibly condemned the testing, promised sanctions, and voted in favor of a United Nations Security Council Resolution condemning these tests at Popcorn. President Clinton during that time imposed heavy economic sanctions on India, which included cutting off all military and economic aid, freezing loans by American banks to state owned Indian companies, prohibiting the issue of American aerospace technology and uranium exports to India, and requiring the US to oppose all loan demands by India to international lending agencies . This created an air of mistrust. Indeed we see how international norms, and taboos affect security policies across the globe. Florin argues that the constructivist have not yet given a theoretical basis for explaining why one norm instead of the other becomes institutionalized (Florin, 1996: 40, 363-389). International norms have varying impacts on security issues globally. As an example , the middle east can react in a complete opposite way to a norm that is widely accepted by the others. In conclusion, we can say that international norms govern policy agendas concerning security for different states. International norms set standards of behavior for states in security matters. Failure to do so is followed by intense scrutiny by the international community. The case of Syria is an example of that. This is because international norms condemn certain weapons, or acts and as such they have strict adherence structures entailed in them. Breaking away from these norms has its own consequences, it could lead to eyeing boycotted by other states, This of course affects how states think, act in relation to each other. This also affects how or what measures states can or will take in order to feel secure. On many occasions, adherence to international norms may make a state feel less secure and look weak in front of the eyes of its own citizens. Therefore what can be said is that yes, in some cases international norms have led to friendly cooperation between states, yet on other occasions, it has led to hostility accompanied by an unconventional arms race, triggering new international conflicts and intensifying already existing international conflicts. How to cite Norms in Security, Papers

Putting Together Your College List

Step one of the college application process: research and explore colleges to apply to. Not sure where to begin with your college list? Take the advice of the following 5 college students who were just recently in the same position as you! While some prioritized their intended academic majors, others cared more about location and geography. See what their experience was like and learn from it: joy2760 Georgetown University ‘21 I knew I wanted to stay on the East coast and I wanted to be in or near a big city. After narrowing it down like that, I looked at the schools that had my intended major and other possible majors I would consider, how big/good those programs and departments were, possible future research opportunities, etc. From there, I looked at a ton of reviews on sites like Unigo and Niche and social media accounts, and tried to get a feel for the school. After doing your research, a lot of it is just going with your gut. danistoilova Barnard College ‘21 I had not initially chosen to apply to Barnard, in fact at the beginning of my college application process I saw it simply as a safety school or as a backup option, but as time went by and I learned more about the institution it quickly made its way to the top of the list. Barnard is unlike any other school, it provides women with the ability to have a small liberal arts education in New York City while still being exposed to all of the resources of Columbia University. The Barnard experience is unique from all other schools in terms of the opportunities that it provides and the way that students are treated. Every young woman at Barnard is able to come out being stronger, bolder, and more confident than she was when she came in. The quality of the academic education at Barnard is beyond excellent, but the education a young woman will get in character development is incomparable.fernilion University of Southern California ‘20 The very first thing I did was look at several ranking lists for undergraduate programs in my major. The architecture program was what was most important to me, so I really looked at schools in the top 10 or 20 in the nation. After that, I made a list of what I looked for in a college. This list grew and changed as I visited some schools, but by the time I was filling out my common app, I knew what I was looking for. Some of my criteria was that I wanted a school that was in a city, but had a unified, typical college campus, and had at-least 10,000 students. I used college boards big future website to type in what I was looking for, and then looked at the schools I was matched with. I researched the ones I had heard of (a school with at least some prestige was important to me), and from that arrived to my top 6. BrownDomer University of Notre Dame ‘20 I did extensive research to find schools that had a good Biology program, allowed undergraduates to carry out research, and of course, had good financial aid systems for students. When youre looking for a school to apply to, dont apply solely based on the prestige of the school. If you want to be a political science major, you would be better off at Yale or an LAC than at MIT. Try to image yourself at the schools youre looking to apply to. Can you see yourself thriving in the environment of that school? Take into consideration the weather, college size, location etc.. when youre making your choice because these are the things that you will be coming into contact with on a daily basis. The name of a school means little to nothing when youre actually going there; its just the reputation. If you arent someone that appreciates a large cool setting, then you would be much happier at an LAC than, say, Stanford. Make wise decisions that you would be happy with throughout all 4 years. VivienneEve23 UC Berkeley’ 20 I made a list the summer before my senior year, and made sure I had a pretty good variety of private and public schools, safety, reasonable, and reach schools, and out of state and in state schools. Dont ever be scared to apply to reach schools, I didnt think in a million years I could get into Ivy League schools but I did! Also, always apply out of state AND in state no matter what you believe in now. I know plenty of my friends who swore they were going to go to school out of state, couldnt wait to leave and then ended up going to in state schools. You never know how youre going to feel once you actually get accepted and/or visit these schools.
